Live By The Spirit
(Read Romans Chapter 8)
Live By The Spirit
“There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.” - Romans 8:1
This chapter is one of my favorites. Life in the Spirit is a journey, and while there are many great passages throughout Scripture that discuss the role and person of the Holy Spirit, Romans 8 is perhaps one of the most insightful. I had a hard time trying to figure out even where to begin because there is so much in this chapter, it covers walking in the Spirit, setting your mind on things of the Spirit, putting to death the deeds of the body by the Spirit, being led by the Spirit, knowing the Fatherhood of God by the Spirit, hoping in the Spirit, praying in the Spirit. There is so much goodness in this chapter. I encourage you to dissect it for yourself.
I love the power in each verse of this chapter as it shows us how to live by the Spirit, letting peace rule in our hearts. We are in a real battle, which requires real weapons especially when we are up against “the flesh”. It can surface at any time in many different ways.. The reason we call it the flesh is because of our fallen nature, which is in direct opposition to the things of God. The apostle Paul calls us to “purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God”- 2 Corinthians 7:1
This chapter teaches us that the Holy Spirit within us testifies that we are children of God. He gives us assurance before God so we are convinced that nothing will ever separate us from His love.- Romans 8:38,39 This is a passage of hope because we know our future is bright in Christ.
Charles Spurgeon has spoke of the confidence many great men and women of God had in God’s love in ages past. He said, "They did not speak of Christ's love as though it were a myth to be respected, a tradition to be reverenced; they viewed it as a blessed reality, and they cast their whole confidence upon it, being persuaded that it would bear them up as upon eagles' wings, and carry them all their days; resting assured that it would be to them a foundation of rock, against which the waves might beat, and the winds blow, but their soul's habitation would stand securely if founded upon it."
The wisdom found in Romans will helps us to identify which aspects of our behavior result from the Holy Spirit’s life and the activity in our life that results from our flesh.
Use this chapter to navigate your new life with Spirit-engendered wisdom and understanding.
Through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, the very life of Jesus Christ is brought into effect in our mortal bodies. As we yield ourselves to Him, Jesus becomes in and through us the very fulfillment of the Law and Word of God, any hostile or disobedient tendency toward God’s Word comes out of your fleshly nature, it’s important that you recognize that.
Romans 8:6-9 says “For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace, because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so, and those who are in the flesh cannot please God. However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him” The Law is fulfilled by the Holy Spirit in us. His presence in you is the very life of Jesus Christ.
Put to death fleshly attitudes and actions by exercising self-control. Acknowledge your adoption as a child of God. Living by the Spirit simply means to live as a child of God. -Romans 8:15
You will be more victorious in your Christian walk when you exercise your Spirit-given self-control. Fight the Flesh! Choose to live by the Spirit!
"and if you live by the Spirit, also walk by the Spirit." - Galatians 5:25 (emphasis mine)
