1 Timothy 1:15-16 This is a trustworthy saying, and everyone should accept it: “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners” – and I am the worst of them all. But God had mercy on me so that Christ Jesus could use me as a prime example of his great patience with even the worst sinners. Then others will realize that they, too, can believe in him and receive eternal life.
At the bottom of this devotion you will find the full context of 1 Timothy 1:12-17.
So many times we or people we know look at the bad things we have done and the mistakes we made and think, “We are not worthy or good enough for the salvation God is offering us.” Even Paul realized how evil he was before his encounter with Jesus on the road to Damascus. He watched people be put to death for their faith in Christ, had people arrested, and denounced Christ with every breath in him. Until that day, the one day that would change his life forever. The same can go for us or those we know who do not know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. You see Christ did not come to save just a few people, He came and died on the cross for everyone. No matter how big or small the sins we may have committed. They all separate us from God and Jesus died to remove that separation. Paul said he was the worst of all sinners and if Christ could save him it means Christ can also save us or our friends and loved ones. All we simply have to do is believe and accept that love and sacrifice.
This brings us to a choice. On one side we have the loving call of Christ offering us hope and a future. That the mistakes we have made can be forgiven and forgotten if we accept and believe. On the other side we have the lies of satan that fill our minds, lies like we are not good enough, we have done too many bad things, or we need to get cleaned up and better before we can accept Christ love. The truth or the lie, we have to choose which we will believe and in that decision is the message Paul was telling Timothy.
I, Paul, was the most screwed up individual on the planet. When you look at people who did bad things, I was the worst. I had people falsely arrested, put to death and even watched as they were stoned. I wasn’t just bad, I was evil, and I hated Christ with a passion that came from deep within my bones. But then I met Christ and His love overwhelmed me. I gave up who I used to be and put that behind me to become the person God called me to be. Even with all my faults and mistakes, I found love and I found hope. Understand this God loves you, He sent his son Jesus to die for you, and no matter what you have done or the mistakes you have made. They can be forgiven. The Price is Paid. The choice is yours. 1 Timothy 1: 12-17 I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength to do his work. He considered me trustworthy and appointed me to serve him, even though I used to blaspheme the name of Christ. In my insolence, I persecuted his people. But God had mercy on me because I did it in ignorance and unbelief. Oh, how generous and gracious our Lord was! He filled me with the faith and love that come from Christ Jesus. This is a trustworthy saying, and everyone should accept it: “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners”—and I am the worst of them all. But God had mercy on me so that Christ Jesus could use me as a prime example of his great patience with even the worst sinners. Then others will realize that they, too, can believe in him and receive eternal life. All honor and glory to God forever and ever! He is the eternal King, the unseen one who never dies; he alone is God. Amen.
