The Spirit's Intercession

“Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.” -Romans 8:26-27

What a powerful passage of Scripture; I could just end this iDevo message with that! There are two main things that we can get out of this. One: When we don’t know what to pray for, the Holy Spirit does. And two: The Holy Spirit prays for us! Let’s explore.

Have you ever set aside some time to pray and then realized you don’t really know what to pray for? This happens to me sometimes (especially if I’m really sleepy). Even if we do have things to say, they certainly aren’t always what we should be praying for. So how do we know what to say when we pray? Well, sometimes we won’t know what to say. However, we can be assured in those times that the Holy Spirit will pray alongside us, and we know that the Holy Spirit will pray for things that are in God’s will. Sometimes the Spirit will even utter these “groanings too deep for words” out of our mouths, causing us to pray in tongues. Don’t be alarmed; this is the Holy Spirit praying on our behalf.

But the Holy Spirit does not only pray alongside us; he also prays over us. Did you know the Holy Spirit prays for you? Since the Holy Spirit knows God’s will, he is able to intercede for us according to God’s will. God hears the prayers of the Holy Spirit and acts in accordance. Wow! I don’t know about you, but this truth gives me great boldness as I minister to others.

When you are facing a situation that seems difficult or overwhelming, remember that your prayers are heard because of the Holy Spirit, and that same Spirit is praying the will of God over you!
