The Good Shepherd

“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me” -Psalm 23:4

What a great comfort this is! No matter what we are facing, our God is a shepherd, leading us through calm pastures and dark valleys. Are you going through a rough time in your life? Has death’s shadow cast itself over your circumstances, blocking any light of hope? Be assured that God is your shepherd. You are walking through the valley of the shadow of death, not walking around in circles within it. You will be brought through this valley, all the time guided by God who is your comfort. So also, this is not death itself, only the shadow of death. A shadow of a knife can’t slice you, and the shadow of a wolf can’t bite you. The shadow only signals the presence of danger. But as long as you are living, you are not overtaken by death and despair! Take heart; your Good Shepherd is protecting you from the danger that is casting this shadow. Trust in him! Jesus says in John 10:11, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” If there is anyone worth putting your trust in, it is Jesus; he is the one who was willing to die a death he was not deserving of so that we would not be overtaken by death. He laid down his life for you; do the same for him!
