With All Your Heart

“And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind, with all your strength.” - Mark 12:30

Does this command seem impossible to obey.?  There is no greater evidence of the inability of man to obey God’s Law than this one commandment. We have a fallen nature which means it is not humanly possible for us to love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength. But to disobey any commandment of God is sin. Which means we are all condemned by our inability to fulfill this one commandment. That is why we all have need of our Savior. We are bankrupt without God.  There was One unlike any other person since the fall that knows what it is to love God perfectly with all of His being and that One is Jesus. He only had one duty on earth: to love His Father. He did not merely avoid sinning while on earth, but by recognizing the Father’s presence with Him, affirmed that He “always” did what was pleasing to God. -John 8:29 He loved the Lord with a perfection that should humble us to the very core of our beings. God, out of His love and mercy in Christ, enables us to love Him truly but imperfectly.

How do we love God the way we should.? By seeking and appropriating His power. Our love and affection for God will grow more intense as time goes by through the witness of God’s faithfulness during times of struggle and trial that deepen our love for God. Over time, we witness His compassion, mercy, grace, and love for us, as well as His hatred for sin, His holiness, and His righteousness.

You can not love someone you do not know. What’s your first priority.? Do you know Him.?

Pursue God and His righteousness, take seriously the command to love Him above all else, and be consumed with the things of God. Eagerly study His Word, eagerly pray, eager obey and honor God in all things, and eagerly share Jesus Christ with others.

Loving God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength requires discipline and it is through these spiritual disciplines that the love for God grows and matures to the glory of God. Our love for God is always flawed and incomplete which is why we must be ever repenting of our failure to love Him fully.

Our hope is in Jesus, who fulfilled this command perfectly in our place so that we do not have to stand before God with only an imperfect love as our hope for entering heaven. Because of our union with Jesus, what is true of Him becomes true of us.

Do you have an intense desire to love God with all of your being.? Shouldn’t that be the only response we have to the One who did not spare His own Son, but gave Him up for us all.? -Romans 8:32

Father God,  I’m thankful for the cleansing of sin that you provide and for the empowering presence of the Holy Spirit you have given me. Lord, because of my desire to love you with my whole being, I ask that you please give to me understanding, that I may keep your law and observe it with my whole heart just as your word says in Psalm 119:34. In Your Name I pray, Amen.
