(2 Corinthians 8 & 9)
“He who gathered much had nothing left over, and he who gathered little had no lack.” -2 Corinthians 8:15
As Christians our souls face countless enemies, be it pride, lust, bitterness, or envy. But few are as powerful and relentless as greed. Greed has been deified in our American culture…look at Black Friday just as an example.. “all the shoving and fighting over stuff.” What is the most effective counter-attack to this insidious force of greed.? Life is about so much more than acquiring stuff.
“For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich.” -2 Corinthians 8:9 This is the key, the cornerstone, the whole foundation that holds the power to liberate our hearts from the grip of greed and release in us, and through us, the joy of generous giving.
I’m a giver. I love to give and to see the joy on the faces of others in need when there need has been met or just gifting to someone who isn’t expecting anything. God is so good and has used my family many many times to bless others and we never get tired of it. I remember a recent evening being so excited about giving to a stranger and leaving a note with an encouraging word that God laid on my heart.- 2 Corinthians 9:7 We left as he bowed his head in my mind he was thanking God for what he received. Generosity promotes worship. -2 Corinthians 9:15
It just feels good to be a vessel and a conduit of God’s love.
We left but did see him peering through a window at us. I wondered what his thoughts were. Did he wanted to see what kind of car we drive.? What did he expect to see when he looked out the window.? But more than that I hoped he knew it was a gift from our Lord and Savior. Just another way to let him know God loves him. That’s what it’s all about. It is better to give than receive. Right.? So many times and in so many ways God has abundantly given back to me and my family in many ways. He is faithful to who He says He is and He keeps His promises. Are we rich with stuff or do we drive the fancy car .? No, but God has always given us more than enough, we are rich in His love, and He always meets our needs abundantly.
Paul says it like this, “I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.” -Galatians 2:20
Generosity is a work of God’s grace and a choice for us. It points us to the sacrifice of Christ and is measured proportionally. It enables a holy equality, necessitates godly stewardship, begets generosity and is an evidence that someone is an active, intentional follower of Christ.
GIVE..You have access to an alternative life force with a never ending supply to be generous!
And in being generous...“God is able to make all grace abound to you, that always having all sufficiency in everything, you may have an abundance for every good deed.” -2 Corinthians 9:8
