BE An Encourager!
BE An Encourager!
2 Corinthians 7:5-7 “When we arrived in Macedonia, there was no rest for us. We faced conflict from every direction, with battles on the outside and fear on the inside. But God, who encourages those who are discouraged, encouraged us by the arrival of Titus. His presence was a joy, but so was the news he brought of the encouragement he received from you. When he told us how much you long to see me, and how sorry you are for what happened, and how loyal you are to me, I was filled with joy!”
Do you lift people up or tear them down? In life it is easy to be critical and be the person who picks on others, discourages, or makes fun of other people’s deficiencies. But that is not who God has called us. For us as believers we are called to be encouragers, to lift people up. In Ephesians 4:29 Paul writes, “Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.” Paul does not say we can pick and choose when our words can be foul and abusive or good and helpful. He says don’t use wrong language and only use good language. It is a tough challenge because it is a lot easier to tear someone down than it is to pick them up.
The difference between an encourager and a discourager is their presence when the walk into a room. A discourager brings people down. This means most people are happy only when that person leaves their presence and not when they enter it. That is no way to live life, being the person everyone hates and are glad that they see you leave. An encourager makes things better, they enter a room and people are happy to see them. Like Titus, their presence is a joy and they make the world a better place.
Take some time today to reflect on whether you have been an encourager or a discourager and remember it is not too late to go from a negative outlook on life to a positive one. Our challenge to you today is to BE an encourager. Live a life that builds people up, the light of Christ is shining in you, and we as believers should be making the world a better place.
