Don’t Think About Tomorrow

(Proverbs 27)

“Do not boast about tomorrow, For you do not know what a day may bring forth.” -Proverbs 27:1

I will admit that there have been times that I have shared my overloaded schedule with friends, and asked for prayer, secretly hoping they might be impressed by all that I have to do. Have you ever done that.? If I had enough time I could probably give you dozens of examples in my life. Groan.

But now instead of being concerned with the days ahead I realize it is more important to take care of what needs doing right then and if there isn’t time to get it all done, I’m thankful for what was accomplished.

Have you ever boasted about tomorrow?

Proverbs 27:1, is urging us to “never boast or brag” or “hastily announce”  our plans for tomorrow.

So, does that mean we are to live only for today and that we should forget about the future.? NO! It just means we should Trust God with our tomorrows.- Proverbs 23:18 Resting in the fact that we know He’s in charge, and He holds our future in His hands.

My daughters took Latin and I remember a phrase they learned that you can see on  tee shirts and coffee mugs proclaiming, carpe diem, meaning “seize the day.”  That’s only the first part of the famous Latin quote. The rest is quam minimum credula postero, which translates, “put very little trust in tomorrow.” That last bit, the last part of the quote is the very heart of our verse. If you haven’t heard of this maybe you have heard Fleetwood Mac’s song, “Don’t stop thinking about tomorrow.” It goes on to say…”Don’t stop, it’ll soon be here” God tells us to do just the opposite of those lyrics. He tells us to STOP THINKING ABOUT TOMORROW! Don’t brag about it! Don’t put your trust in it! Don’t count on your future to unfold the way you think it will! God just may have a different plan. …for you do not know what a day may bring forth.”  Matter of fact we may not even be here tomorrow!

Tomorrow isn’t guaranteed to anyone.-James 4:13-14 Don’t focus on your plans for the future..Focus on God and trust in He to accomplish what He is able to accomplish! That’s my plan. Because we know He can accomplish  “immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine” -Ephesians 3:20

I’m a homeschool mom. I have lots of things I have to get done on a daily schedule and I am one of those moms who always feels like everything has to get done and nothing forgotten. But the truth is, we “have no idea” what’s going to happen tomorrow. Anything can come up to change our plans. Weather can change plans, a check might not arrive on time, someone may break a promise, the car might not start, you may wake up not feeling well.

Maybe God uses the little things to get our attention in a way to tell us to slow down and enjoy everyday not worrying about tomorrow. Solomon wrote Proverbs 27:1 but if you move forward in the Bible to Matthew 6:34 Jesus offers us the same wisdom.

Joshua 3:5 says, “Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do amazing things among you”. Not YOU will do amazing things, but THE LORD will do them.

Each day brings its own surprises. God already has thing put it in motion.

Hand your plans over to God each day and trust Him today, tomorrow, and forever. Don’t think about tomorrow.
