The Aroma of Christ

The Aroma of Christ

2 Corinthians 2:14-16 But thank God! He has made us his captives and continues to lead us along in Christ’s triumphal procession. Now he uses us to spread the knowledge of Christ everywhere, like a sweet perfume. Our lives are a Christ-like fragrance rising up to God. But this fragrance is perceived differently by those who are being saved and by those who are perishing. To those who are perishing, we are a dreadful smell of death and doom. But to those who are being saved, we are a life-giving perfume. And who is adequate for such a task as this?

Have you ever walked in a room and the atmosphere changed or you felt like your presence was offending to someone? For me it happened a lot during my time in the military. I was a lost soul until God found me and completely transformed me. I went from someone living for themselves and the world. To a person living for God and on fire for the things of God. That transformation did not sit well will my old life (friends who were not saved). Most did not understand what had happened and even though I was not shoving Jesus down their throats they still wanted less and less to do with me. I could even be in a room and if someone said a cuss word, they either apologized to me or someone else would say something to them about watching their language. I did not have to say anything but my presence and more specifically Christ in me caused a change in the atmosphere of the room. I really never understood why until I read this chapter about the aroma of Christ.

You see God has called us to be a light in a dark, lost and dying world. Light is a powerful thing and when light shines it exposes everything from the smallest defect, hidden things, and major issues. People who like the darkness do not like being exposed to the light. You see its not you it’s them. Non-believers have two choices when they encounter a believer. They can wonder what that person has inside them and start down the road to find that same thing. That is when the fragrance or aroma of Christ in you is attractive. Or they can choose to dive deeper into their sin and for those perishing will instead find your fragrance or aroma in Christ to be a dreadful smell of death and doom. They don’t like it because it convicts them of the things they are doing wrong in their lives.

Here is the deal, this world wants us to be conformed to the patterns of this world because it is perishing and they want everyone to go along with it but God has challenged us to NOT be conformed to the patterns of this world and instead allow God to renew us and transform us. (Romans 12:1-2) The thing is by being different it sets us apart. God wants our lives to be an attractive fragrance and we are challenged to avoid the things of the world. 1 John 2:15-17 says, Do not love this world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you. For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the Father, but are from this world. And this world is fading away, along with everything that people crave. But anyone who does what pleases God will live forever.

So remember do not apologize for being who God created you to be. Christ inside of you may for a time push people choosing to live a life of sin away but the minute they turn towards Christ. Your aroma will draw them to Christ. So BE the only You, You can BE. And make the commitment to serve the Lord no matter what with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength.
