“For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also abounds through Christ.” -2Corinthians 1:5
Why does God allow you to suffer? So you can one day experience the joy of sharing Christ in a unique way with someone else who is suffering.
Suffering is hard. Everyone suffers somehow. It might be chronic pain, cancer, broken relationships, disability, or the struggle against sin. It’s hard to live in a world of futility and brokenness. I’m sure many of us groan for the day when it is all made right.- Romans 8:18-25 We don't have a choice whether we will suffer—our choice is to go through it by ourselves or with God. But there is value in all things. Even suffering. There is no such thing as pointless pain when you are a child of God. Suffering develops Holiness. It’s important for us to walk through our sufferings in community with other believers who can point us to Christ. By sharing and bearing each other’s burdens we give God glory by highlighting His powerful sustaining grace.
There are also times we can suffer attacks just from our involvement with the Word of God. The enemy knows the Word will strengthen us and he wants to stop it, before we can spread it to others. So it is important for you to guard the Word in your heart and resist the devil when he comes to steal it. The trials the enemy may bring will help bring others to God.
There will be times that God will allow us to go through things simply as a lesson for other people. Look at Paul even during his imprisonment, his stability, and ability to be used by God was evident. Suffering seems to be one of the great instruments in God’s hands to continue to reveal to us our ultimate dependence on Him and our ultimate hope in Him, despite our circumstances.
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. For as we share abundantly in Christ’s sufferings, so through Christ we share abundantly in comfort too.”-2 Corinthians 1:3–5
We will face some adverse circumstances and there are times God will take something away to help us trust Him alone, even if at times it feels like we’ve received a death sentence. -2 Corinthians 1:8–11
But when we choose to stand in faith and confidence, God will bring us through to victory and use us as a great encouragement and comfort to help others. God comforts us so that we can comfort others. He grants us mercy so that we can be merciful to others. He stands with us in our suffering so that we will stand with others who are suffering. God never leaves us alone in our suffering so that we won’t leave others alone in theirs.
Abide in His Word every day for strength. When trials come your way let God use them to make you stronger so you can spread His Word and comfort to those around you who are suffering.
Trials are nothing . . . but God is everything.
