Jesus is a Poor Man
(Read Proverbs 19)
Jesus is a Poor Man
Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the LORD, and he will repay him for his deed. –Proverbs 19:17
If you read the Bible a lot, you have likely noticed a common theme: there’s a lot of stuff about caring for the poor. Here are just a few verses that reference it: 1 John 3:17-18; Proverbs 14:31; Deuteronomy 15:10-11; Luke 14:12-14; Matthew 19:21; Psalm 82:3-4. Perhaps the most striking passage of Scripture about this is found in Matthew 25:31-46. Our theme verse today says that when we are generous to the poor, we are showing generosity to God. The verses in Matthew go even further. In those verses, Jesus is describing what it will be like when he comes back a second time. He says that people will be separated into two groups. One of the groups is congratulated because they cared for people, serving the poor and visiting the sick and so on. Jesus says that whoever did these things for other people did them also for him. So these people get to go to heaven and rejoice. The other group, though, doesn’t have it so good. Jesus says that they did not serve him because they did not take care of the poor and sick and so on. They are condemned and they go on to suffer forever because of it.
Our Christian walk should be a walk that makes us more like Jesus. Jesus spent his whole ministry with the poor, the drunk, the greedy, and the sinful people of his world. If we are Christians, then we should experience a growing concern for the people in this world who are marginalized, mistreated, and dealt a bad hand in life. Are you like that? If this concern is not in you, then pray about it. It’s possible that Jesus will open your eyes to what is really going on around you. Make sure that you are open to how Jesus would lead you to act and think when it comes to this. People will try to help you justify a lack of care for the poor, but it will likely come from the materialistic culture that we find ourselves in. Our culture is no excuse to deny the claims that Jesus makes about how we should act toward others. Check out the verses I listed earlier.
