Guard Your Lips

(Read Proverbs 13)

Proverbs 13:3 “Those who guard their lips preserve their lives, but those who speak rashly will come to ruin.”

Have you ever said something that as soon as it comes out of your mouth, you regret it? I know for me, my mouth always tends to get me in trouble. Maybe it is a disagreement with a friend, spouse, family member or co-worker but all it takes is saying something without thinking and you end up in a heap of trouble.

James says the tongue while a small part of the body can cause a lot of trouble. (James 3:1-12) One word can be a spark that leads to destruction. The truth is our words have the power to bring life or to bring death and when we speak rashly or without thought for someone else, we bring death. This should be something none of us want to do.

James though gives us some great advice concerning how to handle ourselves around others in chapter 1. He says we need to be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry. It is the same advise Solomon gives us in Proverbs 13:3, guard your lips and watch what you say. That you have to think before you speak because if you speak before you think you will be in a lot of trouble.

Take time today to guard your lips and specifically the words coming out of them. Make sure they are bringing life
