The Tithe

“Bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there will be enough food in my Temple. If you do," says the LORD of Heaven's Armies, "I will open the windows of heaven for you. I will pour out a blessing so great you won't have enough room to take it in! Try it! Put me to the test!”- Malachi 3:10

Tithing is considerably less popular than words like generosity or sharing. Is it an Old Testament law only or do Christians have to obey it as well? I have heard many discussions about tithing. Tithing/giving is intended to be a joy and a blessing.  Every Christian should diligently pray and seek God’s wisdom in the matter of participating in tithing and/or how much to give.- James 1:5 Above all, all tithes and offerings should be given with pure motives and an attitude of worship to God and service to the body of Christ. “Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver” -2 Corinthians 9:7 Tithing is one of God's tools to create generous people.

If we as believers acknowledge that all is from God, then does any of it really belong to us?  In Matthew, Jesus told the parable of the servants who were each given a talent (a coin of that age, but does it not also translates into our gifts from the Spirit?) It was loaned to them to make use of it. So it is the same with everything my Lord gives me, from my health to my wealth. The prophet Malachi famously spoke of failure to tithe as a kind of robbery of the divine. "'You are robbing me. Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test Me in this,' says the Lord Almighty, 'and see if I will not throw open the flood gates of heaven and pour out so much blessing there will not be room enough to store it.'"

Tithing is not the last word in generosity; it's the first word. But it's a word that God takes with deep seriousness; perhaps because when we  get vague around finances,  grow deeply evasive.

My husband and I always strive to give Him a monetary ten percent because it is a discipline, reminding me that He really is over-gracious in allowing me to use the other ninety percent. All I know is that by tithing, His blessings have always returned to me, many times over.

Let me invite you into an experiment. I challenge you to test tithing. “see if God will not throw open the flood gates of heaven and pour out so much blessing there will not be room enough to store it.'"-Malachi 3:10

Father God, help me to always remember that everything I have is from You. Keep me from mistakenly thinking I have earned any of it apart from Your power. This year, remind me to always give back to You in obedience and discipline, grateful for the blessings You have bestowed through Your Son and my Savior. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.
