Made In God's Image

“So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” -Genesis 1:27

There’s a picture on my phone of me and my youngest child, smiling back at the camera. It was taken a month or so ago. She looks so much like me. God has made an extension, a likeness of myself. She is her own person and she lets us know it. She was created for her time, for such a time as this. However, she bears my image. Have you heard the phrase “like father, like son” many use it to refer to family resemblance. When people see my likeness in my children, it pleases me. God wants his children to bear his image and likeness, too. The Bible says we “must put on the new self, which is created in God's likeness and reveals itself in the true life that is upright and holy.” -Ephesians 4:24

All our lives we've heard that we're "made in the image of God" and in all of creation, it’s true that only human beings are made in God’s image. This is a great privilege and it gives us dignity. We are made in God’s image. Wow! It's a nice thought, and a great reminder of our own value. But have you ever stopped to think about what it really means? "Made in the image of God" Genesis 1:26-27 says, "Then God said, 'Let us make man in our image, in our likeness' ... So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them."

You are a snapshot or facsimile of God! As humans we occupy a higher place in the created order because we alone are imprinted with godlike characteristics. We were created with 6 distinct characteristics. We are all creative, intelligent, aesthetic, moral, relational, and spiritual. Your godlikeness is the path to your greatest fulfillment.

God's image has been imprinted uniquely on you. In God's creativity there are no duplicates; you are the only you there has ever been or ever will be. That’s pretty awesome!

You will feel the greatest pleasure and wholeness when who God made you to be, is fully developed and expressed.

God knew what he was doing from the very beginning. He decided from the outset to shape the lives of those who love him along the same lines as the life of his Son. . . . We see the original and intended shape of our lives there in him. -Romans 8:29
