Is He Sleeping?
“And when he got into the boat, his disciples followed him. And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep.” Matthew 8:23- 24
You have accepted Jesus as Your Savior and now you have followed Him into the boat. Now, in a stormy part of your life when the waves of despairing doubts are crashing in and you need Him the most, it seems He must be sleep? Can you imagine the disciples' thoughts when Jesus accused them of not trusting Him. I can hear them now..."Are you KIDDING me?? We're about to get KILLED in this storm, and You're ASLEEP!!"
How were they supposed to know He had everything under control? He didn't even appear to know what was happening! If He wasn't acting, how would they know to trust Him? The same questions at times continue to plague believers today. How can we have faith when it doesn't seem like God even knows we're hurting? Or worse, what if He does know and chooses to do nothing? I think all Christians at some point in life have felt that way. I know I have, when I was 18 I was 2-3 credits short from graduating but God continuously told me to trust Him I was finished,I didn’t pray like I do now but I said okay God and I graduated. When I was 27 and pregnant the Dr.’s told me my daughter had trisomy 18 and would be a stillbirth baby. I had to pray through the doubts and fears of losing my baby and she came out perfect with no defects at all. In Psalms David was known to cry out to God and ask why He was being silent. But it is during those seemingly silent times that we can learn so much. What happened when the disciples in the boat called on Jesus? Jesus was asleep as the storm raged. Why? Because he had total trust that God would protect Him. He was at peace. Jesus knew His life was protected and that God would not let Him down. He wanted His disciples to sleep in peace as well. He still does.
Do you believe He knows what's best for you? Then why don't you trust Him? Is it because He isn’t doing what you want Him to do.? again Do you believe He knows what’s best for you?
Trust that God does know what's best for you and that He is always working behind the scenes, even when you don't see His movements. He may be asleep right now, take heart. He's just dreaming up something better than you ever could have imagined for yourself. If you have faith, rest in the assurance that no matter how your boat is tossed, God will be there on time, with the life preserver.
“He awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.” -Mark 4:35-41
There is an older Christian song that says sometimes He calms the storm, but other times He calms His child. The point is, He calms. Trust Him to.
Father God, Thank you for never leaving my side in the good times and in the bad times. I acknowledge that You have always been present in my life. I am resting in Your peace knowing that whatever happens now or in my future, You are with me. I love you. In Your Name I pray, Amen.
