Revelation 2:4 “But I have this complaint against you. You don’t love me or each other as you did at first!
The Church in Ephesus caught some major flack. They thought they were doing pretty good. They worked hard, endured through trials, they didn’t stand for evil, or liars. Basically from the outside they looked exactly how a believer should look. Today we do the same thing. We have a list of “Do Not’s” we are supposed to follow and we think by following our list of rules it makes us a Christian. Can I tell you according to that way of thinking, my mailbox is a pretty good Christian. It doesn’t drink, doesn’t smoke, never done drugs, never said a mean or bad word, never lied, never stole anything, never hurt someone else, the list goes on and on. The thing is we tend to judge our walk and the walk of others by the rules we are or not following.
The thing is, being a Christian is about relationship. It is about God being our number 1 priority, about Him being our first love. The thing about this time of year is that God can quickly end up not being our first love. Work, School, Family, Boyfriend/Girlfriend, Hunting/Fishing, Sports, Recreation, Shopping, and the Holidays can all quickly push God down to second, Third or even last on our list.
The challenge for us today is the same one the church in Ephesus faced. Making sure God stays as our first love. For those who may wonder, we can determine our priorities (our love) by looking at where we place our time, talent, and treasure.
There is an old saying, “Let me look at a person’s calendar/day planner and checkbook and I can tell you where their priorities are.” Take some time today and evaluate your life. Is God still your first love? Has something taken God’s place and become your first love? If God is no longer your first love, make a commitment today to make a change in your life and make Him a priority.
Here is a good list for getting your priorities in order.
