There is no Comparison

“We do not dare to classify or compare ourselves with some who commend themselves. When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are not wise.” -2 Corinthians 10:12

One of the quickest ways for me to lose  my focus is to compare my life with the lives of others. When I returned from Honduras my eyes were open to the things God has blessed me with and quickly the enemy stepped in to remind me of what I don’t have.  I was content with my life, until I let the enemy sneak in to advert  my attention across the fence and to see all that my neighbor has!  I’m not just talking about physical blessings here, but the niggling feeling that someone is having more success than I am. Can you relate?

Paul tells us plainly that those who compare themselves to others are not wise.  Stop Comparing!  Do you remember what Jesus Christ told Peter as they sat by the campfire on the shore by the sea of Galilee. He had just restored Peter to fellowship and told him what his life’s work would be. Peter turned and, looking at another disciple, he asked. “Lord, what about him?” Jesus answered, “What is that to you? You must follow me.” -John 21:21,22

There is someone in your life you have been comparing yourself to.? It’s time to get your focus back on God!

Like Peter, we tend to compare our lives to others. “God is blessing her more than me.” We think..and then soon another thought follows. It’s not fair. I’m working just as hard as she is and doing a lot for the kingdom, why isn’t He blessing me like that?  The enemy uses comparisons to shift our focus away from God onto our circumstances, spawning thoughts of discontent. When we compare our lives we start doubting God’s goodness. Jesus told Peter, “Keep your eyes on me.” “Why compare yourself with him? I have a good plan for each of you.”  He is saying the same thing to you today. Keep your eyes on Jesus and be faithful to what He has asked you to do.

When you're tempted to compare your life with others, quickly remind yourself that God loves you! His plan is tailor-made for you. Acknowledge your own blessings in life. Focus on what you have, not on what you don’t have and trust our loving God with the rest.

Thank you God, that you have a beautiful plan for each of  us. I want to keep my eyes on Jesus and be faithful in doing what He has asked me to do, leaving the rest to Him. Thank you for loving me the way you do. Amen.
