The Short End of The Stick

Psalm 84:11 promises that "no good thing will he [God] withhold from them that walk uprightly."

Have you ever felt like you are getting the short end of the stick?

Sometimes it can feel like God is holding out on us or holding us back from something good.

The attitude of our heart can be like a child who receives dinner from his mother and lets out an exasperated cry. The mother immediately turns around and asks her child to explain the source of frustration. The child sincerely explains the disappointment is not with mother but with the broccoli on their plate. The mother knows although the broccoli may be the point of contention, ultimately the dissatisfaction of her son is aimed at her.Maybe your boss may have overlooked you for promotion, or the boyfriend/girlfriend that may have dumped you. The teacher that misgraded your paper. If you maintained your indignation, you may slowly start to believe that God is holding out on you. Sound familiar?

Do you feel disappointed today? How is disappointment affecting your spiritual journey?

“He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? “ -Romans 8:32

If you feel like you are missing out on something, you have a wrong view of God. Don’t swallow the bait that Satan tried with Adam and Eve in. But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” Genesis 3:4-5 He made them think God was withholding something good from them. Satan can’t force us to sin. So he tries the next best thing, to get us to doubt God’s word and character.
Your circumstances may at times veil the generosity of God, the truth is that He gave us what was of greatest value to Him: His Son! Rest assured that God is not holding out on you; in fact, He is generous and good! Trust God's intentions toward you.

Fight your thoughts of entitlement and discontent and enjoy God’s generosity. When you commit, anytime, anywhere, at any cost, to do anything, you don’t just end up with the promise of the kingdom, you end up with the King.

What is it that you think God is withholding from you? What do you think you are missing because you are doing right? No one can outspend, out bless, or out love God. You can't do better than trusting God and following Him! Believe God’s promises even if all creation seems to contradict it. Believe God’s word over your strongest feelings. Of course to believe God’s promises, you must regularly take them in, for “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.” -Romans 10:17

Father God, Thank You that in Your perfect love, you give and take exactly what I need for joy, growth and holiness. Please help me to walk by faith, not by sight; faith that you are not holding out on me but are exceedingly generous in every way. Help me to trust You in the face of paralyzing disappointment and discontent. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.
